Lesson Title: Exploring STEM Careers Related Lessons: What is STEM? Grade: 8th Grade Unit: Introduction to STEM
Standards: TEK 1E: Compare and contrast engineering, science and technology careers Objectives: The student will explore different careers with the field of STEM and see how the trends for them have changed. ISTE NETS-s: Critical Thinking, Research and Information, Communication and Collaboration, Creativity and Innovation
During Class:
Time
Instructional Activities
20-25 minutes
Students will divide into groups of three to explore the careers list that they made previously. Students will conduct research from the Internet to see how trends have changed within those STEM careers.
25-30 minutes
Students will need to determine at least three key factors that pertain to the increase in STEM careers over the past 10 years.
10 minutes
Students will begin to compile the information that they have gathered to prepare and organize their PowerPoint presentation.
Notes: Student groups should be reviewed to ensure that students are productive, minimize disruptions and distractions, etc.
On-going Assessments: Teacher will monitor and assist throughout to ensure that students are staying on task and to answer any questions that students may have as to how to complete the assignment.
Accommodations: Additional time and assistance will be given to students as needed.
Lesson Reflections/Notes: Students will be responsible for finding all or the majority of the information that is needed to complete their group’s PowerPoint presentation since time will be limited for Internet usage.
